Base Text: Revelation 5:1–14
“Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” (Revelation 5:5)
Every beginning of a new year carries silent questions in the heart: What will happen? Will it be better or worse? Will I be able to face the challenges? We make plans, set goals, and organize dreams—but we also carry fears and uncertainties.
The world around us does not convey security. Corruption, violence, wars, injustices, and the loss of values seem to renew themselves with every generation. For many, history is merely an endless cycle, a succession of meaningless events or a record of human madness. At first glance, it seems that nothing changes—and that it never will.
In Revelation 5, John sees a scroll sealed with seven seals, a symbol of a complete, perfect, and final plan. This scroll represents the history of humanity—its direction, its purpose, and its end. And the question that echoes in heaven, on earth, and even under the earth is: “Who is worthy to open the scroll?” (v. 2).
No one! No angel or human being. No authority, power, or system. No one!
When John realizes that no one is worthy to open the scroll, he weeps (v. 4). His tears reflect our anguish about the future or the pain of those who look at the world and ask, “Where is all this heading?” Yet the command from heaven still echoes today: “Do not weep.” (v. 5).
Jesus, the Lamb who was slain, is worthy. He holds the scroll. The future of the world, of the Church, and of your life is in Christ’s hands. The solution is not in human hands—it is in Jesus’ hands. The scroll of history is now in His hands. This means the future is not out of control. God reigns. God has written the ending.
For this reason, we can make plans, set goals, and dream without fear. We do not trust in our plans; we trust in the God who governs all plans. Anxiety diminishes when we remember who holds the scroll of history.
Tomorrow is not an out-of-control unknown—it is a chapter already written by the sovereign God. Even when the world seems to be falling apart, the Lamb remains on the throne.
If everything belongs to Him, then the new year does as well. Surrender your time, your resources, your energy, and your talents to Jesus. May He not be just a part of the year, but the center of everything.
If the future is in Jesus’ hands, why live in fear of tomorrow?
